What diaper size worked for us—from newborn to 27 lb
We learned quickly that diaper weight ranges are only a starting point. The fit—and how it holds up overnight—matters more.

Before our first baby arrived, we bought newborn-size Pampers Swaddlers. At the hospital, we noticed the nurses were already using size 1. We kept using Swaddlers, but our baby quickly outgrew newborn size and moved to size 1 almost immediately.
With our second baby, we started with size 1 right away. The hospital sent us home with a pack of about 16 newborn Pampers Swaddlers as well as some size 1 diapers. The size 1 diapers felt a little lower quality and looked slightly different from the Swaddlers we had purchased through Amazon, so they may have been a different Pampers line rather than Swaddlers.
A note on wipes
With our first baby, we started with unscented Pampers wipes and later switched to scented ones. When our second baby arrived, we went back to the unscented wipes. Their neutral product smell seemed more noticeable to us at first, but now we barely notice it.
At 27 lb: size 4 or size 5?
Our older baby is 27 lb—within the listed range for size 4 and right at the transition to size 5. Size 4 still works when the waist closes easily, the leg cuffs seal, and we are not seeing red marks or frequent leaks. We try size 5 when size 4 rides low, feels stretched, or starts leaking more often.
Still a good daytime fit for us.
More room and coverage for night.

What we do at night
We put on a fresh diaper right before bed and make sure the leg ruffles are pulled out. At this in-between stage, size 4 can work during the day while a well-fitted size 5 works better for a long wet night.
Our online search did not turn up a verified capacity number. Some websites and parent discussions say size 5 has about 30% more capacity than size 4, but we could not find that figure in Pampers' published information or tie it to a standard test. We treat it as an online estimate, not a product specification.
The first night we used size 5, a little pee still leaked. It did not happen again on the following nights, so for our baby it appears to have been a one-off leak rather than a pattern. A larger diaper can offer more room and coverage, but the leg and waist seal still matter.
- Change promptly for poop, leaks, discomfort, or irritated skin.
- For a wet-only diaper, follow your pediatrician's advice about waking your baby.
- If leaks continue, try an overnight diaper or a nighttime booster pad.
Every baby and diaper brand fits differently. Newborns, diaper rash, diarrhea, illness, broken skin, or unusually low urine output may need personalized pediatric guidance.
